Glynis, an upholsterer from WA and long-time supporter of Endeavour Foundation, knows good craftsmanship when she sees it. So when she walked into her newly won $3M Prize Home on the Sunshine Coast, she gave its $155,000 designer fit-out her professional tick of approval.
After years of supporting a cause close to her heart, her loyalty (and her Star Supporter subscription) finally paid off in the best possible way.
An upholsterer by trade, Glynis, from Western Australia, is well-equipped to appreciate a quality fit out when she sees one.
“I've been doing this trade since I left school. So many people just throw things away rather than restoring them. I do a proper job, and I only use quality materials.”
Luckily, the $155,000 fit out of Endeavour Foundation’s spectacular Yandina Creek Prize Home on the Sunshine Coast, was up to Glynis’ high standards.
“Because of my trade, as soon as I came into this house, the first thing I looked at is all the furniture,” she laughed.
As the winners of this $3 Million Prize Home package, Glynis and her husband Brian, a retired mechanic, are now owners of a stunning, four-bedroom home, kitted out from top to bottom with carefully curated designer furniture.
“When I saw the pictures online, I thought it looked good quality and as soon as I walked in here, I checked it out, and I thought, yes, that's good material. I look for faults and everything and I couldn't find any fault. To see it for real in person, I love it, it’s beautiful,” Glynis said.
“In my words, it’s pretty flash,” Brian added laughing.
Glynis has long enjoyed a wander through a prize home, never once believing that one day, one might be hers.
“When I lived in Queensland, Mum and I used to go and visit all the prize homes. “Mum would say, “Are you doing anything on the weekend? Will you take me out to see this prize home?”
“She would have been happy if she'd been alive today. She loves views, so she would have loved this house.”
As a long-term supporter of Endeavour Foundation, it’s only fitting that Glynis’ is now the proud owner of her very own prize home.
“I've been a supporter of Endeavor Foundation for many years on and off, and it was probably early to mid-last year, I found that I could start buying some more tickets. So, I just went into a Star Supporter subscription, and it comes off my credit card every month.
Being a Star Supporter is good because you just subscribe and forget about it.
You don't have to think, Oh, did I buy tickets this month or not? It's automatically done. I'd rather do that than buy lottery tickets.”
Glynis was so relaxed about it, in fact, that she didn’t even realise it was draw day when her lucky ticket number finally came up.
“I was just sitting at the computer doing things for my business, and I get this phone call,” she said.
“When they said, “You’re a winner”, I thought I’d probably won the early bird prize – you know the $5,000.”
But when Glynis found out that her prize was the ‘big one’, valued at a tidy $3 Million, she could barely comprehend the news.
“I couldn't stop shaking. I rushed out to the kitchen with the phone, told my husband and I got shaky. I was wobbly. Brian held me up and I couldn't get the words out that we’d won a home. I couldn't really believe it.”
“Then I checked online, and I thought, “Oh my goodness, we have won!” and I went to pieces and my legs were jelly under me then.”
At first, Glynis was apprehensive to share the news until it was all official.
“We come from a tiny town in the wheat belt in West Australia, and I was bursting to tell everybody, but I couldn't. I had to keep it a secret and then just before we left to come here, I said to one of my girlfriends, “OK, you can tell people now.”
Now that Glynis and Brian have gotten over the shock of winning, they are gradually settling into the idea that they are set for life.
“We know we don’t have to struggle now. It doesn't matter what we do from now on, things are going to be a lot better than they were,” Glynis said.
“This has been an answer to our dreams. It's going to make us secure which is wonderful.”
“Good things come to those who wait, and you've waited a while for it!” Brian added.
While winning a prize home is the icing on the cake, Glynis’ main motivation for buying tickets was always to support the work that Endeavour Foundation does.
“She's always thought of other people before herself and still does. That's why she won this house – she was thinking about the Endeavour Foundation rather than winning a house,” Brian said.
“I will always be a supporter because I know Endeavour Foundation does such a good job,” Glynis explained.
“I’ve supported since I was in my 20s, which is a good 50-odd years, you know.
“Endeavour Foundation does such a wonderful job of supporting people with disability, teaching them life skills, getting them jobs, and giving them a home.”
“We've both got people with disability in our own families,” Brian added. “You know, you can't get any better cause.”
