For decades, Coomera, at the northern end of Queensland’s famous Gold Coast, has been known as the theme park capital of Australia thanks to its most famous resident, Dreamworld, which draws around a million thrill-seekers a year.
But with so much more to offer than rollercoasters, this rapidly growing suburb is now also luring investors from far and wide for a taste of the action.
According to the Australian Financial Review, interstate buyers are flocking to the Gold Coast for a cheaper beach lifestyle, with one in four Gold Coast auction buyers coming from interstate.1
For those interstate investors doing their research, Coomera is ranking high on the list of golden GC opportunities.
In fact, CoreLogic named Coomera as one of the top three investment hot spots on the Gold Coast in 2023.
Our Prize Home team, who are, not surprisingly, quick to spot a winner, also saw the potential. Which means, for a $10 investment, one lucky ticket holder will be able to add a $2.2 million piece of Coomera real estate to their portfolio.
The suburb, founded on the ancestral lands of the Yugambeh people, is named after the ‘kumera’, a Bundjalung language word for a local wattle tree with a special bark that was used to stupefy fish.
These days, the stupefying part is how this patch of paradise has managed to remain one of South East Queensland’s best kept secrets.
Whether you’re looking to settle down or invest, as a location, Coomera doesn’t get much better.
Just 45 minutes from the Brisbane CBD via the M1, Coomera is well and truly within commuting distance.
It’s also at the northern gateway to the Gold Coast, with Southport, Main Beach and The Spit just a 30-minute drive to the south.
And commuting in and around the area is only going to get better with Stage 1 of the ‘Coomera Connector’ now under construction with the first sections expected to begin opening in late 2025.
This new, major access road will offer an alternative to the M1 and is expected to improve travel times to the Gold Coast’s CBD, Gold Coast Hospital and GC university campuses including Griffith and Bond.
But for many of the area’s residents, it’s the access to the spectacular Gold Coast Broadwater, via the Coomera River, that is the biggest attraction of all.
The Broadwater, which runs between the mainland and South Stradbroke Island, stretching from the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Moreton Bay all the way down to Southport and the Gold Coast seaway.
If you’re a boatie, you can forget Surfers Paradise, because it’s this northern end of the Gold Coast that really comes into its own.
For those that prefer to explore on land, you can still experience the Broadwater along the Broadwaterway – a 19-kilometre pathway along the length of the foreshore.
Coomera residents can also take their pick of golf courses with Sanctuary Cove courses ‘The Palms’ and ‘The Pines’ nearby.
Add a thriving town centre, including a Westfield shopping centre, and new infrastructure like the Coomera Connector, and it’s surprising that Coomera is still one of the more affordable suburbs on the Gold Coast with a median price of $800,000 and solid growth of 6.7% over the last 12 months2.
And with a role in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics (the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre will host the Olympic volleyball and the Paralympic wheelchair rugby), the suburb will only continue to attract attention over the next decade.
It’s no wonder the rush is on for investors to get a foot in the Coomera market while they can.
